Banana defects
Edited
Friction scars
Typically on the shoulder of the banana, where the hands would come in contact with each other or the box.
Point scarring
Typically on the backs of the fingers where the points of the back row of bananas (outer whorl) rub against the front row (inner whorl).
Thrips/insect damage
Thrips is insect damage caused by the feeding of the thrip insect on the banana peel during growth. Once healed, the resulting tiny, black, protruding bumps on the peel surface are known as Thrips damage.
Speckling
Speckling is more common during rainy growth periods and unlike Thrips damage, it is flat and cannot be felt by hand.
